Welcome to click click, the sporadic review of what I find worth clicking on the internet.
Discovered the work of Janette Beckman via The Grumpy Owl. Her admirable career has recorded youth culture, musicians, and protest for decades, no production, no pretension. Check out her archives of 1970s London style tribes and 1980s B-Boy scenes.
- The Colour Purple in Ancient Rome – also from Grumpy, a very poetic history of prestigious purple.
- Intersection – great street style videos of non-fashion people from The New York Times.
- Subjective – and if only real fashion models will do, this series of models reflecting on famous images from their career is lovely – adore Kate Moss’ pygmalion voice!
- WTF – two recent interviews by Marc Maron which both manage to get a realistic and heartfelt take on controversial subjects from view of creators, instead of critics. Listen to RuPaul on identity. And Shepard Fairey on appropriation. What, you want more RuPaul? What’s The Tee?
- History 101 – the origins of knitting.
- The Lost Mod – having just read Absolute Beginners, Quadrophenia is next on my wish/playlist. Another instance of art imitating death: The Most Beautiful Suicide.
- The Complete Picture – the best Andy Warhol documentary I’ve seen, careful research and minimal famewhoring. And here is some NSFWherever Warholian boy candy: Blow Job and Joe Dalessandro.
- Venus X shuts down GHE20GOTH1K – the rampant appropriation and dismantling of youth subcultures by pop stars continues. Via Kevin.
- I Am A Hysteric – Fiona Duncan is in fashion conspiracist mode, again.
- The Grand Narrative – James added some terrific, long footnotes to my cursory sketch of the South Korean trend of alphabetization: Inventing Labels for Women’s Bodies, Girls are different from boys and Historical precedents for Korea’s modern beauty myth.
- The Illuminated Letter – “My work centers on nature’s Endangered or threatened Species, flora, and fauna of our planets Coasts and water ways.”
- Jennifer Macleod – “I have an eclectic nature, I’m like a human magpie in a shiny world.”
